Sergio Bitar Chacra

Sergio Bitar Chacra  Minister of Mining in Salvador Allende’s government, he was arrested in 1974 following Pinochet’s coup.

Having lived in the United States and Venezuela, Bitar returned to Chile in 1985, playing a leading role in the Concertación, which governed the country over four consecutive terms from 1990.

He served as Minister for Public Works in the government led by Michelle Bachelet from 2008 to 2010, and is today a senior fellow at the Inter-American Dialogue, a non-profit organisation engaged in the analysis and study of issues, policies and strategies relating to the American continent.
